Job Duties: 


-The lab technician will be expected to work full time with Laboratory Supervisor

-24 hour coverage in addition to any call time coverage, and to be available according to the call back policy. 

-Schedule is 7 days on, 7 days off. 7 day work week is 5 work days with on-call coverage for 2 days and after hours.

  • performing laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations;
  • carrying out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses;
  • preparing specimens and samples;
  • constructing, maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment, for example centrifuges, titrators, pipetting machines and pH meters;
  • ensuring the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced;
  • recording and sometimes interpreting results to present to senior colleagues;
  • using computers and performing mathematical calculations for the preparation of graphs;
  • keeping up to date with technical developments, especially those which can save time and improve reliability;
  • demonstrating practical procedures if working in education;
  • conducting searches on identified topics relevant to the research;
  • following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks.


Education, Training and Experience:


-Must meet the requirements for a clinical laboratory technician as noted in the current rules pertaining to clinical laboratory science practitioners in the State of Montana. 

-Requirements under CLIA regulations that must be met

-Regulations that concern continuing education must also be met

All patients testing by the clinical laboratory technician will be under the supervision of the laboratory supervisor.

-All results will be checked within 24 hours, either by telephone, in person, or by electronic means. 

-Must posses a current MT CLT license.


Key Responsibilities:


  1. To perform specific tests in areas mentioned above.  See the lab QA manual for the list of tests which each lab employee is authorized by the lab director to perform.  The testing includes calibration, actual testing procedures, preparation of reagents, internal and external quality control, and reporting of results.  The testing of the laboratory technician is expected and required to be performed accurately, precisely, and dependably 100% of the time.
  2. To forward samples to appropriate labs when tests are ordered that are not in this facility.
  3. Keep accurate records on all patient test results and all quality control.
  4. Provide periodic preventive maintenance on all laboratory equipment, instruments, etc.
  5. To insure that the laboratory is neat, clean, and in efficient running order at all times and to provide a safe working environment.
  6. To keep abreast of recent technical developments in lab medicine and acquire 14 hours of continuing education per year.
  7. To generally assist and cooperate with the laboratory supervisor in providing the best possible functioning of the laboratory and in turning out reliable and cost effective work.


Worker Traits: 

Aptitudes: Numerical ability required to calculate tests results using standard formulas, and to measure accurate quantities of samples and reagents.  Form perception required to notice pertinent details of specimens under microscopic study.  Color discrimination required to stain slides and distinguish various colors and shades of colors of specimens.  Neatness and attention to details a must.


Interests:  A preference for scientific and technical activities required the patient perform a great variety of lab tests and to keep abreast of the latest innovations in methods of testing.

Temperament:  Keen judgment to evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of tests.  Must be able to perform under extreme stress at times.  Laboratory testing requires precise and accurate job performance carried out according to established laboratory procedures.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions:  


Work is not physically demanding but mentally demanding and stressful.  Excellent visual acuity required and good manual dexterity.  Technologist is constantly exposed to infectious materials and caustic chemicals and poisons, which require extreme care in handling.  The technician should be familiar with the contents of this department's OSHA manual, which contains the written Exposure Control Program, Hazard Communication Program and the Material Safety Data Sheets for the chemicals that are found in this laboratory.  Safety procedures such as gloves, lab coats, safety goggles, splash shields, etc., are available and must be used by the technician when appropriate.


Evaluation of the work performance by the laboratory supervisor, in accordance to policies of the facility and also in accordance with the CLIA regulations, in regard to when the evaluations are done and what is evaluated.
